Traditional Dance of Jamaica History Before radios became affordable to the Jamaican locals, music was publicly broadcasted in open areas on a setup known as a ‘sound system’. The music played at that time 50s generally came from the US or the UK and consisted mainly of rhythm and blues. But with the emergence of Jamaica as an independent nation in , nationalism gripped the locals, who wanted to celebrate their freedom with a new music style. Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd and Duke ‘Trojan’ Reid were in fierce competition with each other as ‘toasters’ of their sound systems. This became the real entertainment value of the sound systems. Toasting sessions began to draw large crowds of people, sparking discussion over who was the best. The creation of Jamaica’s first record label, ‘Federal Records’, ignited a recording frenzy by local bands that were supported by Dodd and Reid. The local ‘mento’ music influenced by European and African folk music of the early 50s had now progressed to ‘bluebeat’, a Jamaican version of rhythm and blues, and everyone wanted a piece of the musical pie. Toasting sessions were replaced by ‘band plugging’. The brass instruments, piano and drums that were characteristic of the ‘bluebeat’ style took a back seat and the bass became the focal point, creating a new style called Ska.

Maitreya , Buddhist eschatology , and List of Buddha claimants Maitreya is a bodhisattva who in the Buddhist tradition is to appear on Earth, achieve complete enlightenment , and teach the pure dharma. Though Maitreya Buddha appears in the canonical literature shared by many sects of Buddhism, Buddhists in different historical contexts have conceived of Maitreya Buddha in different ways. In early medieval Chinese Buddhism, for example, Taoist and Buddhist ideas combined to produce a particular emphasis on the messianic role of a Bodhisattva called “Prince Moonlight.
Erik Zurcher has argued that a certain “canonical” Maitreyan cult from the fourth to sixth centuries believed Maitreya to inhabit the Tusita heaven where Buddhists might be reborn in the very distant future.

This was the first installment of a three-part series highlighting Christian women in Jamaica who wore the dreadlocks hairstyle in variations. What is interesting about these women is that they were commissioned by God to cut their locks for reasons unique to each. Prophetess Sarah Smith later encountered challenges in her faith and had to lose her crown of locks. Here is her story: Her Story I started to lock my hair while I was attending school overseas because it was more convenient.
It was expensive and time-consuming to maintain natural hair while in college so I learned to do it myself. Locking my hair was just a hairstyle for me; I saw it as nothing more. Upon locking my hair, I started to realize that I was gaining much attention from individuals in the Rastafarian community. Spiritual Awareness I did not realize that by just having this hairstyle installed on my head, I was exposing myself to spiritual influences contrary to the spirit of God. Even as a Christian, I was still being swayed in the direction of Rastafarianism and the aspects of that culture.
I was listening to Etana , I-Octane, and other Rastafarian artistes. I realized that I was being drawn to this genre of music but I justified it by saying that even though these artistes were not Christians their music were positive. Conviction swept over my heart as a Christian but I never acknowledged that emotion. Neither did I realize the behavioural patterns in my Christian walk with this new-found love for the Rastafarian culture.

This tradition was continued by Eustache Deschamps , Christine de Pizan c. Its distinctive sound has appeared particularly in jazz and rock songs of the last fifty years. Its principles are derived from both the ‘celesta’ and the ‘electric guitar’. The action is similar to that of a conventional piano, but whereas in a conventional piano each key causes felt-covered hammers to strike sets of strings, in a Rhodes piano rubber-tipped hammers strike tuning fork-like constructions to sound the note.
